Dear RPCVLA Community,
We stand in solidarity with the movement to stop the spread of hate toward our Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. We also want to support organizations that are working in these communities to promote justice, support families in need, and empower future leaders. As Peace Corps Volunteers, we are united by our mission for world peace and friendship and our dedication to creating positive change here at home.
So as we approach Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we invite you to join us in our Matching Gift Campaign. Through April 30th, RPCVLA will match every donation made to the Jean M. Yamanaka Peace Corps Memorial Fund, up to $1,500 total.
This year’s donations will benefit the Southeast Asian Community Alliance (SEACA), which aims “to build power among Southeast Asian youth and their communities in Los Angeles for a more just and equitable society through intergenerational, multiethnic dialogue, leadership development, and community organizing.” Current projects for 2021 include:
1. COVID-19 relief & vaccination assistance – Low-income families and seniors in Chinatown and Lincoln Heights receive groceries, hot meals, PPE, cash assistance, and community-based vaccine clinics. Over 1,000 seniors and essential workers were vaccinated just last week!
2. Youth leadership programs and training for youth organizers - High school students learn about issues in their communities and are provided with training in areas such as multi-language community outreach, public speaking, and SEACA’s community advocacy, such as affordable housing and improving the economic well-being of low-income residents.
