The Vibrant Years: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 13,657 ratings

“Bursting with humor, banter, and cringeworthy first dates, Sonali Dev’s The Vibrant Years is a joyful and fun read, but it’s also very much a timely tale about a group of underestimated women demanding respect and embracing their most authentic selves.” —Mindy Kaling

Living on their own terms means being there for one another.

When sixty-five-year-old Bindu Desai inherits a million dollars, she’s astounded—and horrified. The windfall threatens to expose a shameful mistake from her youth. Desperate to keep the secret, Bindu quickly spends it on something unexpected: a condo in a posh retirement community in Florida.

The impulsive decision blindsides Bindu’s daughter-in-law, Aly. At forty-seven, Aly still shares a home with Bindu even after her divorce from Bindu’s son. But maybe this change is just the push Aly needs to fight for the segment she’s been promised for years at the news station where she works.

As Bindu and Aly navigate their new dynamic, Aly’s daughter, Cullie, is faced with losing the business that made her a tech-world star. The only way to save it is to deliver a new idea to her investors—and of course they want the half-baked dating app she pitched them in a panic. Problem is, Cullie has never been on a real date. Naturally, enlisting her single mother and grandmother to help her with the research is the answer.

From USA Today bestselling author Sonali Dev comes a heartfelt novel about three generations of hilarious, unconventional, ambitious women navigating bad dates, a spiteful HOA board, reemerging exes, and secrets that refuse to remain hidden. Join the Desai women on a shared journey of self-discovery as they dare to live their most vibrant lives.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of December 2022: Looking for a novel full of family, fiery women, and lucky/unlucky in love vibes? If so, The Vibrant Years will give you all those rom-com feels and then some. It’s funny and warm-hearted about a gregarious and gorgeous grandmother (spoiler, she steals the show), her daughter, and her granddaughter (a very successful app developer) who ban together to confront pesky HOAs, bosses who squash dreams, ex-boyfriends and ex-husbands, and ultimately, work together to try and develop an app to help those looking for love. Inevitably hijinks ensue, especially when the grandmother is mysteriously bestowed a million dollars and they each try their luck in the dating pool. Published by Mindy Kaling’s imprint, The Vibrant Years is teeming with inter-generational banter, joy, and the invincibility of these women who dare to be themselves. —Al Woodworth, Amazon Editor

Somali Dev solidified her rightful status among my most revered authors with this insightful, and stunning book.
Falling in love with her voice, her style, and her stories was inevitable. My only displeasure lies in having come to the end of the journey, and I will deeply miss this book.

I almost put this book down; I’m glad I didn’t! The story is a slow starter as the author builds the background and develops the characters. It is the story of Cully, her mother Aly, and her grandmother Bindu. Each woman is facing a life altering situation and their strength is their love and support for each other. As they move forward and deal with life’s curve balls, each woman must face her own fears and dreams. All three are forced to find their true feelings and motivations creating growth. I thought this was a beautifully told story with a range of emotions and humor. Definitely worth the read!

Beautifully written book with a timeless (and juicy) storyline that is both diverse and relatable on many different levels. Three generations of unconventional women, each so perfectly imperfect, I quickly found myself feeling a bit rebellious along with major FOMO for the relationships they share!! SONALI DEV explores the complexities of our shared universal experiences of love, loss, family, freedom, courage, shame, and identity with humor, wisdom and joy that left me feeling refreshed and inspired. THE VIBRANT YEARS fully engaged my heart and mind from start to finish, and I am 100% hoping for a gorgeous film release!!

I enjoyed the first half of this book. The second half seemed to be scrambled. At times I had no idea what was going on and had to keep going back to reread. The characters were great but then seemed shallow. I think this probably would have been a great short story. I never understood the app that Cully was famous for, nor did I understand what she was trying to do with the new app. It’s like the author set up some great Plots but just didn’t follow through. Also the book promises hilarity, I probably got two chuckles out of the whole book. Overall it was a little disappointing.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the different perspectives of the three different women and could relate to each of them in turn as I am myself a mature woman now. I also enjoyed learning more about Indian culture.

I normally read science fiction or fantasy. I am not often drawn to other types of fiction, but the write up for this book was enticing. I am so very glad I gave in to this temptation.
This story is rich, lush, with the thoughts, desires, schemes and lives of three women in the same family, living in and around and from their culture and their lives. It was amazing to take this journey with Bindu, Alisha and Callie as the central protagonists of the story, and how they worked to make themselves the center of their lives, even after years of giving up parts of themselves to appease society/others.
I am looking forward to reading Sonali Dev's reworkings of the Jane Austen novels. I heartily recommend this book to every one who feels even a little sense of rebellion against what society expects and wants from us (fact: while it centered on the women, it also showed how the men come to terms with how they are required to be - and rebel too!)

The book turned out to be a great surprise. I had seen that it was a Romance novel so I figured I wouldn’t like it.
The characters are in-depth and I fell in love with each person

“The Vibrant Years” tells the story of three generations of Indian-American women , the day-to-day restrictions and prejudices that take their power away, and of the subtle ways they fight to take that power back. Bindhu, after a lifetime of repressing herself to fit into the mold of a socially acceptable Indian wife, mother, and grandmother, is awakening to what it means to live life on your own terms even as she’s repeatedly confronted by the mysterious past that caused her to repress herself to begin with. Her straight-laced daughter-in-law Aly held back on pursuing her career for years to advance her husband’s, and is now struggling to transform herself from “diversity hire for fluff pieces” into a serious and respected news anchor while navigating the aftermath of her midlife crisis divorce. Aly’s daughter Cullie is a 25-year-old software engineer who designed an app worth millions, was tricked into losing control of it by a toxic boyfriend, and is now scrambling to develop a new project as part of a deal to save the app.

The story is very good, though the pacing is a bit slow at times - it’s slow to start, meanders along at a slightly faster clip, speeds up briefly for the climax, then slows down substantially for the falling action. What stands out about this book though is that like its characters, “The Vibrant Years” has a tendency to meander toward the middle of the road. There are comedic moments, but not enough to call this a comedy. There’s a touch of a mystery, but not enough to call it one. There are a few dramatic moments, but none that are especially tragic or particularly long-lasting. The book is neither one thing nor the other, and that is both its strength and its weakness. It has the freedom to do anything it wants, but what it does primarily is hold itself back.

The writing is solid, I love good character work, they each have a journey to take to become better versions of themselves. They are doing the work and they don't have to do it alone, these Indian American women have each other.

What an amazing story! Love, culture, relationships, secrecy and living a full life!!
Bhindu is the central character who is a huge presence in the lives of everyone she knows.
The story charts how she, her son Ashish, daughter in law Aly and granddaughter Cullie navigate life. Bhindu has a secret causing heartache esp if anyone should discover it.
It's funny heartwarming sad poignant.
I absolutely loved it!!

I love that one of the main characters is a sexy, free-spirited older Asian-American woman. Most grandmothers are portrayed as wise, grumpy or fun, but never as an individual.

This story shines a light on the challenges women have faced and continue to face in their personal and professional lives, in a heart warming way. I loved following the journey of these three women and how they met their challenges with cynicism, humour and strength.
