Since the collapse of peace talks in April there has been a string of violent incidents, the latest a deadly attack on a synagogue

24 April Nine months of US-mediated peace talks collapse.

15 May Two Palestinian teenagers are killed in a West Bank clash with Israeli troops.

12 June Three Israeli teenagers – Eyal Yifrach, 19, Gil-ad Sha’er, 16, and Naftali Frankel – are abducted and killed by Hamas operatives in the West Bank.

13 June Israel launches a military operation to find the teenagers, arresting hundreds of Hamas members. Hamas militants in Gaza respond with rocket attacks.

2 July Mohammed Abu Khdeir, a 16-year-old Palestinian from east Jerusalem, is abducted near his home and burned to death by Israeli extremists in a revenge attack for the deaths of the Israeli teens. The death triggers violent protests.

8 July Israel launches a military campaign against Hamas in Gaza after heavy rocket fire on Israeli cities. The war lasts 50 days and kills more than 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the UN. Seventy-two people die on the Israeli side.

1 October Israel gives final approval for construction of a new housing development in east Jerusalem, the section of the city claimed by the Palestinians as their future capital.

22 October A Palestinian man rams his car into a crowded Jerusalem train station, killing a three-month-old Israeli-American girl and a woman from Ecuador. The attack comes after weeks of clashes around a holy site in the Old City that is sacred to Jews as the Temple Mount and revered by Palestinians as Haram al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary).

29 October A Palestinian on a motorcycle shoots and seriously wounds Yehuda Glick, an Israeli-American rabbi campaigning for more Jewish access to the contested Jerusalem holy site.

5 November A Hamas militant slams a van into a crowd waiting for a train in Jerusalem, killing two people.

8 November Israeli police shoot and kill an Arab Israeli protester at a demonstration in northern Israel. Video indicates the man was walking away from the officer when shot.

10 November Palestinian attackers kill two Israelis in Tel Aviv and the West Bank in separate stabbings.

13 November The US secretary of state, John Kerry, meets the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, and Jordan’s King Abdullah in Amman. The trio agree on steps to defuse tensions at the Jerusalem holy site.

14 November Israel lifts age restriction at the holy site; Friday prayers go off without incident.

16 November Police say an Israeli man was stabbed in the back by an “Arab” attacker in Jerusalem.

17 November The Israeli government says it will step up punitive demolitions and gives notices to families of Palestinian attackers.

18 November Two Palestinians storm a Jerusalem synagogue, killing four people and wounding six.
