Reese Witherspoon is expanding both her relationship with Apple and her portfolio of unscripted shows.
The actress and producer will executive produce a country music competition for Apple TV+. My Kind of Country is the first competition series to land at the 9-month-old streamer. Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Done + Dusted will produce the series.
“Well, it’s not looking like I’ll ever fulfill my childhood dreams of becoming Dolly Parton … but this might just be the next best thing!” Witherspoon wrote in an Instragram post announcing the show. “I am beyond excited to share that Hello Sunshine will be partnering with Apple to bring y’all its very first competition series.”
The show, described as a “hybrid series,” will bring a documentary sensibility to the music competition genre. It aims to break down cultural and musical barriers in the country music space, inviting innovative musicians to unleash their authentic voices.
Witherspoon will executive produce with Hello Sunshine’s head of film and TV, Lauren Neustadter, and senior vp unscripted programming Cynthia Stockhammer. Sandbox Entertainment head Jason Owen — who manages country stars Kacey Musgraves, Kelsea Ballerini and Faith Hill, among others — also executive produces along with Izzie Pick Ibarra (Dancing With the Stars, The Masked Singer) and Done + Dusted’s Katy Mullan and Melanie Fletcher.
Adam Blackstone, who has worked with Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys and others, will serve as musical director.
My Kind of Country is the third show Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine will produce for Apple, joining dramas The Morning Show (which also stars Witherspoon) and Truth Be Told. In the unscripted realm, Hello Sunshine also produces The Home Edit for Netflix.
