Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos on Wednesday took to social media to announce that he and wife MacKenzie Bezos are divorcing after 25 years.
“As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends,” the couple wrote in the statement, shared on Jeff Bezos’ Twitter account.
They added, “If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”
Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos share four children. The Seattle-based duo first met at bank D.E. Shaw prior to Jeff Bezos founding Amazon. MacKenzie Bezos — now a novelist who has written books such as Traps and The Testing of Luther Albright — served as one of Amazon’s first employees.
In February 2013, MacKenzie Bezos spoke with Vogue about her marriage, revealing that she and her husband — who, according to Bloomberg, is worth $137 billion and is the richest person in the world — have very contrasting personalities.
“He likes to meet people. He’s a very social guy. Cocktail parties for me can be nerve-racking,” she said at the time. “The brevity of conversations, the number of them — it’s not my sweet spot.”
