Regina King used her time on her soapbox for a purpose at Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards.
When she took the stage to accept her best supporting actress award for her performance as Sharon Rivers in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, King declared: “I’m going to use my platform to say that in the next two years, everything I produce is going to be 50 percent women.”
Ignoring the music trying to play her off, she noted that “I know it’s going to be tough,” but she challenged “anyone out there who is in a position of power, not just in our industry, but in all industries, to stand with us in solidarity and do the same.”
King also received a nomination for best actress in a limited series or movie for playing Latrice Butler in Netflix’s Seven Seconds. She won an Emmy for the role this year.
When she took the stage, King first thanked fellow nominee in the category Amy Adams, “for the prayer, sweetheart.” Claire Foy was also nominated for her work in First Man, while Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz received nods for The Favourite.
King choked up recognizing Jenkins in her speech: “I love you with all my heart. Thank you for your empathy, thank you for telling stories so rich, and thank you for giving us a film that — my son said to me when he saw it that it was the first time he really saw himself.”
Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg hosted the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Jan. 6.
Tune in after the telecast for The Hollywood Reporter and Twitter’s official live aftershow. Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Golden Globes, is a division of Valence Media, which owns The Hollywood Reporter.
