The comedian tweeted the news Thursday that he will be writing and starring in an untitled romantic comedy directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and produced by Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Knocked Up). “Excited, terrified, completely in shock and PROUD as hell to announce this movie,” Eichner wrote. “We’re making a big, new romantic comedy for Universal!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!” (Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.) Set up at Universal, the film will be co-produced by Stoller via his Global Solutions company, alongside Apatow Productions. The project is in the early stages, but it will reportedly center on two men with commitment problems who decide to make a go at a relationship with each other. Eichner also tweeted in response to a fan’s celebration of a major Hollywood studio making a romantic comedy about two men. “Well I hate when people say ‘my heart is full’ but my heart is f—ing full,” Eichner wrote. “Don’t worry, it won’t last.” A three-time Emmy nominee for Billy on the Street, Eichner has recently expanded more into film, with both The Lion King and Noelle on the horizon. News of this latest project comes amid an uptick in romantic comedies, powered by movies like Netflix’s Set It Up and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Warner Bros’. Crazy Rich Asians. Universal also has an Emma Thompson-penned holiday rom-com in the pipeline, starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. A fellow member of the Apatow creative enclave, Paul Feig, is attached to direct.
