Serena Williams wins Open Era Record 23rd Grand Slam title

Serena Williams' Australian Open victory against her sister Venus was her 23rd Grand Slam title. That breaks a tie with Steffi Graf for the most in the Open Era. Williams is just one behind Margaret Court for most all time. With the win, Serena will regain the WTA No. 1 ranking from Angelique Kerber.

Serena is now 10-5 in her career against Venus in Grand Slam matches and 7-2 in finals at those events. Overall, she is 17-11 against Venus, including non-major meetings.

It's her seventh Australian Open title, tied for the second-most titles at a single slam in the Open Era. She also has seven at Wimbledon. Both of those marks trail Martina Navratilova's nine at Wimbledon, but Serena is the only woman to win seven titles at multiple Grand Slam events.

At 35 years and 124 days old, Serena is the oldest Grand Slam winner in the Open Era. She continues to add to her career portfolio. This is her 10th Grand Slam title after turning 30. No other woman has more than three such titles in the Open Era.

This was Serena's sixth Grand Slam title without dropping a set. That ties Navratilova for the most such titles in the Open Era. Serena has 21 wins and no losses in Grand Slam finals when winning the first set.
