Fyre Festival, the ultimate lesson in expectation vs. reality, is getting the documentary treatment in Netflix’s upcoming movie about the disastrous music event. Netflix released an exclusive first look at the documentary today (Dec. 10.)
Fyre follows the events of the 2017 luxury music festival on a private island in the Bahamas, which ended in complete catastrophe after attendees arrived to unsanitary festival ground conditions instead of the opulent amenities that were promised with their pricey ticket. The festival’s demise played out in real time on social media as guests struggled to leave the “Hunger Games-like” conditions of the island.

Fyre Festival’s creators, Billy McFarland and Ja Rule, were slapped with numerous lawsuits totaling more than $100 million in damages. McFarland was also sentenced to six years in prison for wire fraud.
Fyre, directed by Chris Smith, gives viewers an inside look into one of the most notorious scams in music festival history. The newly-released teaser captures the rapid rise and decline of the festival, as footage of guests ready to “party like rockstars” is quickly replaced with clips of tents and prepackaged sandwiches, instead of the villas and gourmet meals the guests came expecting.
Watch the disaster unfold when Fyre premieres on Netflix on Jan. 18, but for now, check out the trailer below.
