13 N.J school districts held elections Tuesday and - surprise! - hardly anyone voted. See how bad it was

These school districts are the 13 holdouts.

The rest of their 530 counterparts across the state have switched to November elections – most made the change immediately after a 2012 law allowing school district votes to move from April to the fall, held in tandem with the general election.

But voters in 13 New Jersey towns went to the polls Tuesday to cast votes for their local boards of education, and in most cases, on whether or not to pass the district budgets. Schools that flipped to the November election, so long as they remain under the two percent budget increase cap implemented by the Gov. Chris Christie administration, do not need to have budgets approved by voters.

Tuesday's vote includes a historic one in Newark. For the past 22 years, the district, which was under state control, voted for members of an advisory board. This year, with local control fully restored to the district, voters will choose members of a board of education, which will have the power to hire its own superintendent.

Unofficial results and voter turnouts, as reported by county clerk offices, are below.

Projected winners are listed in bold type.

Turnout

Districts that switched to November argued the April elections were expensive, and drew very few voters.

"In terms of voter turnout, in the years when all districts held April school elections, turnout averaged 10 percent to 15 percent of registered voters," New Jersey School Boards Association spokesman Frank Belluscio said.

"Needless to say, voter turnout in November is greater," though he said the organization has not tracked whether or not it has dipped further in April school elections held since 2012.

According to preliminary results Tuesday, counties saw the following dismal turnouts:

Bergen County (Cliffside Park, Fairview, Garfield, Hackensack and Oakland)
