Christian Bale took home the Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a musical or comedy film for his role as former Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice on Sunday night.
“Aw, look at us, what a bunch of lucky buggers we are, to make a life out of doing something that we love,” the actor began as he peered out at an audience filled with industry colleagues. “Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this for so many years.”
He went on to say, “Thank you to my beautiful wife, who says less is more. I can ruin a perfectly good movie and a so-so career in one speech, so thank you for that advice, my love. Thank you for our beautiful children; they’ve given me a love and a soul I never thought possible.”
Bale referred to his children as “Banana and Burrito,” but those aren’t actually his kids’ names. Bale has jokingly referred to his kids by the “Banana and Burrito” nicknames before, according to CBS News, as a play on the unconventional names some stars bestow on their offspring.
Bale then turned his attention to director Adam McKay. “Thank you to that geezer over there, Adam. He said, ‘I’ve got to find somebody who can be absolutely charisma-free and reviled by everybody,’ so he went, ‘Ask Bale.’ What do you think, Mitch McConnell next? That could be good.”
Bale kept his speech short, but later joked, “Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration.”
He went on to thank the cast and crew, emphasizing the prosthetics experts on Vice. “I share this award with you gentleman,” he said.
The actor beat out John C. Reilly for Stan & Ollie, Lin-Manuel Miranda for Mary Poppins Returns, Robert Redford for The Old Man & the Gun and Viggo Mortensen for Green Book.
Late on Sunday, Cheney’s daughter, Rep. Liz Cheney, tweeted back at Bale with the comment “Satan probably inspired him to do this, too” with a link to a story of the British actor getting arrested for assault in 2008.
The Church of Satan also weighed in, offering up their approval: “To us, Satan is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of our highest personal potential. As Mr. Bale’s own talent and skill won him the award, this is fitting. Hail Christian! Hail Satan!”
This was one of six Golden Globe nominations for Vice, which is McKay’s seventh feature film.
Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh hosted the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Jan. 6.
Tune in after the telecast for The Hollywood Reporter and Twitter’s official live aftershow. Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Golden Globes, is a division of Valence Media, which owns The Hollywood Reporter.
