BLACKSTONE, Mass. — A woman was able to save her cat from a sinking vehicle after she crashed her car into the Blackstone River.
Blackstone Fire Chief Michael Sweeney said the woman, who is in her 60s, was taken to an area hospital with cuts on her hand, and her cat is also OK.
"She's a spunky lady," Sweeney said. "To be able do what she did and get out of that car, she was amazing."
According to Sweeney, the woman, who is in her 60s, had just picked up her cat from a groomer when her car went down a steep bank and into the river near the Rhode Island state line.
Sweeney said a passerby saw the woman's car go down a steep, 50-foot bank and then saw the vehicle floating down the river.
The witness, a man, jumped into the water as the current carried the vehicle down the river.
The woman was able to climb out of the passenger window with the cat, which was in a carrier, just before the car sank into the water. The good Samaritan helped them climb onto the riverbank.
"I think what (the vehicle) did is it stayed on its wheels, floated down and then it started tipping on its side as it was sinking," Sweeney said.
Sweeney said that the car's airbags inflated, which may have helped keep the vehicle afloat long enough for the woman to climb out with her cat.
Crews rescued them from the bank and brought them to safety across the river in a boat.
Divers from the Blackstone Fire Department found the car submerged in about 14 feet of water. A tow truck pulled the submerged car up from the water at approximately 3:50 p.m.
