Tom Brady throws an interception on his first pass of Super Bowl LIII

ATLANTA — Over his past two Super Bowls before Sunday, Tom Brady threw 110 passes with just one interception.

In Super Bowl LIII, Brady threw an interception on his first pass.

The New England Patriots had a good drive going to start Sunday’s Super Bowl, and it was all on the ground. When the Patriots finally decided to pass, Brady made a mistake.

Brady looked to his right and threw to Chris Hogan. Los Angeles Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman — who is infamous for a non-call on a pass interference in the NFC championship game and made more headlines for saying Brady was showing his age — broke up the pass to knock it away. It was an ill-advised pass by Brady, who rarely makes those mistakes. The pass deflected to Rams linebacker Cory Littleton for the pick.

It was rare for a few reasons. Brady is just the third quarterback to throw an interception on his first pass of a Super Bowl, joining Jim Kelly in Super Bowl XXVI and Ron Jaworski in Super Bowl XV, according to ESPN Stats and Info. It was also the first time all season Brady threw an interception on the Patriots’ opening drive.

Needless to say, it wasn’t how Brady wanted to begin his ninth Super Bowl.
