Killing Eve star Sandra Oh took home the Golden Globe for best actress in a television series, drama on Sunday night, becoming the first Asian-Canadian and first actress of Asian descent to do so since the 1981 show, when Yoko Shimada won for Shogun.
Oh also made history as the first person of Asian descent to host the Golden Globes.
Oh was up against fellow nominees Caitriona Balfe (Outlander), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Julia Roberts (Homecoming) and Keri Russell (The Americans) for the honor.
“Oh my god!” she screamed upon accepting the award. Oh thanked her family, her team and her “incredible cast” for the honor. She also specially thanked her parents, who were in attendance and even made it into Oh’s opening monologue alongside co-host Andy Samberg.
On the show, Oh plays Eve Polastri, the security operative in charge of tracking down an elusive, psychopathic assassin, played by Jodie Comer.
This is Oh’s second Golden Globe. She won previously in 2006 for best supporting actress in a series, miniseries or motion picture made for television for Grey’s Anatomy.
Backstage after the show, Oh couldn’t contain her excitement. “I am just slowly kind of landing into this room with you. The win is so surprising. Also I was so stressed about hosting that I couldn’t give it one second’s thought. This is one of the most incredible nights of my life, so I am incredibly grateful,” she said.
She also gave another shout-out to her parents, joking, “My parents are amazing people and Internet sensations and they are so happy. For Asian kids to make our parents happy, it is so fulfilling.”
Tune in after the telecast for The Hollywood Reporter and Twitter’s official live aftershow. Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Golden Globes, is a division of Valence Media, which owns THR.
