In these upsetting times, it’s helpful to have constants to latch onto and thankfully Banksy, the elusive street artist, will always manage to somehow out Banksy himself. On Friday in London, one of the disruptive artist’s iconic works, “Girl with Red Balloon,” was auctioned off at the famous Sotheby’s auction for a whopping $1.4 million, which tied his record at a previous auction.

Just moments after it was sold, the painting, in exhaustingly Banksy fashion, began to self-destruct like something out of a James Bond movie. A shredder that was hidden in the frame of the artwork began to destroy the image, and while there’s obviously no information about just how the shredding conveniently began right after the painting was sold, a remote device controlling it seems to be the likely culprit.

Alex Branczik, senior director and head of Contemporary Art, said in the Sotheby’s news release, “It appears we just got Banksy-ed.” Of course, the street artist went to Instagram to confirm the destruction of his art with a photo captioned: “Going, going gone.”

Banksy fans are going wild over the artist’s latest trick—leaving comments like “Tricky Genius” and “that’s art!” So while we all wait on Banksy’s next trick, thinking about his identity yet again eludes many. Honestly, the best trick that the street artist could play on any of us would be to reveal that he’s like secretly a fortysomething accountant living in Iowa instead of destroying his artwork.
