It’s more than just marvelous.
The Television Academy handed Amazon its first-ever Emmy series win on Monday night when it awarded The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with the trophy for best comedy series.
Daniel Palladino, who serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside his wife, Amy Sherman-Palladino, thanked Amazon in his speech. “You guys have been nothing but supportive,” he said.
The comedy cleaned up during the kudocast, winning in nearly every category it was nominated, including lead actress in a comedy series (Rachel Brosnahan), supporting actress in a comedy series (Alex Borstein) and both writing and directing for a comedy series (Sherman-Palladino).
Amazon was nominated for 22 Emmys, 14 of which were for Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The streamer, which offers the hourlong drama and other originals to subscribers to its Prime Video service, became an Emmy contender in 2015 with Transparent, which that year was nominated for 11 awards. The show ultimately took home five trophies, but lost out in the comedy series category to HBO’s Veep.
This is the first time that a streaming show has won in the comedy series category, which has been dominated by Veep for the last three years. (The series was not eligible this year, having delayed production on its seventh and final season as star Julia Louis-Dreyfus underwent treatment for breast cancer.)
Hulu made history at last year’s Emmys when The Handmaid’s Tale became the first streaming show to win either best drama or comedy series.
