Happy Golden Globes nominations day! While this year’s awards season is looking…well, a little depressing (thanks, pandemic), at the very least, we have The Official List™ of TV shows and movies that were good enough to secure nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. As expected, The Crown and Ozark racked TF up! But one rather…unexpected show that made the cut? Emily in Paris.
Emily in Paris managed to secure two noms—one for Best TV Series: Comedy and the other for star Lily Collins in the Best Actress, TV Series: Comedy category. While this is great for the show’s creators, Twitter is pretty upset that Emily in Paris got two nominations while shows like Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You and Issa Rae’s Insecure got shut out from the list entirely.
As a reminder: Emily in Paris was also criticized at the time of its release for its overly Francophilic nature, Emily’s lack of character development, and Patricia Field’s (Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada) costuming. In an interview with Vogue Arabia, Lily said, “As disheartening as it sometimes is to read these things, it’s also a gift; you’re being allowed to improve.”
Lucas Bravo, who plays Gabriel on the show, also responded to the show’s backlash and agreed with people who said that Emily in Paris showed only a privileged view of the city. “I think they’re right, in a way,” he told Cosmopolitan. “We’re portraying cliches and we’re portraying one single vision of Paris. Paris is one of the most diverse cities in the world. We have so many ways of thinking, so many different nationalities, so many different neighborhoods. A lifetime wouldn’t be enough to know everything that’s going on in Paris.”
Regardless, the show’s creator, Darren Star, wouldn’t change anything about Emily in Paris. “The show is a love letter to Paris through the eyes of this American girl who has never been there. The first thing she is seeing is the clichés because it’s from her point of view,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not sorry for looking at Paris through a glamorous lens. It’s a beautiful city, and I wanted to do a show that celebrated that part of Paris.”
