Not long after Robbie Myers announced her exit as editor-in-chief of Elle, Nina Garcia has been named as her successor, Hearst Magazines announced Tuesday.
Garcia will report to Hearst Magazines chief content officer Joanna Coles and she’ll start her new role Sept. 18.
Prior to Elle, Garcia served as Marie Claire‘s creative director since 2012. She was Marie Claire‘s fashion director from 2008 to 2012. The Colombian fashion journalist is no stranger to Elle, having worked with the title as its fashion director from 2000 to 2008. She previously held other roles at Elle since 1995. She started her career at Mirabella, a women’s magazine created by former Vogue editor Grace Mirabella.
“ELLE is close to my heart, and this is a very special homecoming,” Garcia said in a statement. “This is ELLE’s moment to be out in front, inspiring and informing readers in every area. Fashion and beauty are at ELLE’s core, as are culture, politics, health and new media. I’m excited to work with this incredibly talented team to set the pace for women who are moving as fast as the times we live in.”
During her time at Marie Claire, Garcia introduced several franchises, including “What Nina Loves” and “Fashion Week Diaries,” and helped the glossy win several awards, including the Accessories Council’s ACE Award and the Jewelers of America GEM Award.
Garcia is also best known for her role as a judge on Project Runway since it launched in 2004. She’s also a New York Times best-selling author of four books, including The Style Strategy and The Little Black Book of Style.
“Nina embodies all the qualities of a modern editor-in-chief,” Hearst Magazines president David Carey said in a statement. “She’s an important authority in fashion, respected by her peers for her personal style, her ability to spot talent and her deep relationships across the industry.”
Added Coles: “Nina is the ultimate ELLE woman — her life is incredibly full, she’s curious about everything and she’s passionate about fashion, beauty, technology, art, travel, the environment, women’s issues and the ways that they all intersect.”
Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, Garcia is a graduate of Boston University and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
