Casey Affleck took home the Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, drama, on Sunday night for his role in Manchester by the Sea.
The actor beat out Joel Edgerton in Loving?, Andrew Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge?, Viggo Mortensen in Captain Fantastic? and Denzel Washington in Fences.
Affleck has been racking up award wins this season for his role as an uncle thrust into guardianship of his young nephew after the death of his older brother. His Golden Globe comes on the heels of wins from the National Society of Film Critics, the Gotham Awards, the Hollywood Film Awards and wins from critics associations in New York, Chicago and Boston.
“I suppose you won’t be passing on movies in the future,” Affleck joked to friend Matt Damon, who originally was slated to star in the role.
“I said I would only give this role up to Casey because it’s such an incredible role, and we got it set up with Casey, and he just absolutely crushed it,” Damon said on the red carpet before the show. “He’s really one of the best actors. I’ve known him since he was 5 years old. I just love him, he’s just one of the best people I’ve ever met and one of the best actors I’ve ever seen. I just knew he was going to kill it, and I’m really proud of him.”
Jimmy Fallon hosted the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton on Jan. 8.
