  • The 63-year-old has used the same holiday hiking outfit for the fifth year running

German chancellor Angela Merkel has been pictured on a hiking trip wearing the same holiday outfit in the same location for the fifth year running.

The 63-year-old has been enjoying a vacation with husband Joachim Sauer, 68, in northern Italy's Ortles Mountains as she takes a break from leading her country.

Pictures show how she has favoured the same red checked shirt and light-coloured walking trousers for her hiking holidays since 2013.

Her fondness for wearing the same holiday outfit follows in the footsteps of former Prime Minister David Cameron, who was often seen wearing a blue polo shirt on his summer breaks with wife Samantha.

Yesterday pictures emerged showing Merkel looking less-than-happy while on holiday with her husband.

The pair were seen in full hiking gear and boots

The sighting came just after her fellow female premier Theresa May was photographed elsewhere in Italy wearing a pink dress.

The Prime Minister, known for making bold fashion choices, was criticised for her outfit choice of a £26 Next shirt dress.

She was seen wearing the summery outfit twice as she explored the Lake Garda area with husband Philip.

Mrs Merkel and Joachim opted for substance over style on their holiday as they set off for a day of hill walking.

The pair were initially dressed for chilly weather on the exposed sides of the Ortles mountain range with fleeces, accompanied by waterproof shorts, hiking socks and boots.

They also clutched two walking poles each to help them over the tough terrain.

During the winter Solda is a popular skiing destination, hence the ski lift the couple were pictured riding.

Merkel took her holiday after a week in which one man was killed during a suspected Islamist attack in Hamburg, and the leader of Poland's ruling right-wing party demanded Germany pay reparations over the Second World War.

A 50-year-old was killed by a 'known Islamist' after he stole a 50cm knife from a supermarket shelf and began stabbing people with it.

The attacker is reported to have screamed 'Allahu Akbar' before running into the Edeka shop where he also four others who were trying to flee.

Meanwhile Germany's relations with Poland worsened as Jaroslaw Kaczynski accused the country of shirking its responsibility over the Second World War.

Kaczynski made the comments amid a rift between Poland and the EU over controversial justice reforms that would have stripped the country's Supreme Court of much of its power.

The reforms were blasted by the EU as undemocratic and saw Poland's voting rights revoked. President Andrzej Duda has agreed to veto the proposals after protests.
