On Sunday night, one of the most common refrains was, unsurprisingly, the need for a more inclusive and supportive environment for women—both in Hollywood and beyond. Seth Meyers made the #MeToo movement a cornerstone of his opening monologue; celebrities including Laura Dern delivered inspiring messages as they accepted their awards. And then there was Natalie Portman, who couldn’t help but slip a little snark into her introduction for best director—capping off Ron Howard’s introduction with one curt, apparently unrehearsed sentence: “And here are the all-male nominees.”

The Golden Globes have never been quite as sanctimonious as other awards shows, but the contrite reactions from the male directors nominated in this category—each of whom delivered a sheepish expression to the camera when his name was read, including eventual winner Guillermo del Toro—is still a delightfully squirmy study in awkwardness. Let’s just say we’re already sketching out a Renaissance painting in this moment’s honor.
