Eagles QB Nick Foles makes Super Bowl history with TD catch

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles (9) celebrates his touchdown with Nate Sudfeld (7) during the second quarter in Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium.

MINNEAPOLIS – Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles caught a fourth-down touchdown pass on the wildest play of a crazy first half of Super Bowl LII.

The score gave the Eagles a 22-12 lead over the New England Patriots in the final minute of the second quarter.

The Eagles took a timeout before the fourth-down snap, giving head coach Doug Pederson extra time to go over the trick play.

Foles moved out from under center, and center Jason Kelce snapped the ball to running back Corey Clement, who quickly handed the ball off to tight end Trey Burton.

A former college quarterback at the University of Florida before his move to tight end, Burton threw a touchdown to Foles, who had run free into the right side of the end zone.

Foles became the first player ever to both throw for and catch a touchdown in one Super Bowl.

That Foles caught the touchdown pass was even more remarkable given the Patriots’ failure on a similar trick play earlier in the game. Receiver Danny Amendola attempted a long pass to Brady in the second quarter. The pass was on target, but Brady (who had stitches removed from the palm of his right hand late last month) dropped it.

Shortly after Foles’ touchdown catch, Eagles fans at U.S. Bank Stadium began chanting his last name, while doing the Vikings’ “Skol” clap over their heads.
