The president addressed the nation this morning, following Wednesday’s shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school. Watch his remarks in the player above. The president said the school was a “scene of terrible violence, hatred and evil,” adding that the whole country “with one heavy heart” is praying for the victims and their families. Trump also said he’s making plans to visit Parkland, Florida, to meet with victims’ families and local officials. The suspect, identified as former student Nikolas Cruz, 19, opened fire yesterday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. His attack killed 17 students and school staff members and injured another 15, who are being treated at local hospitals. Cruz was charged Thursday on 17 counts of premeditated murder. A day after the shooting, Trump tweeted that the suspect was “mentally disturbed.” “So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!” he tweeted. In his address, Trump promised to “tackle the difficult issue of mental health.” Elsewhere, Trump thanked law enforcement, first responders and teachers “who responded so bravely in the face of danger” for their courage. Earlier this morning, the White House said Trump issued a proclamation honoring the victims of the school shooting. “Our Nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones in the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida,” the proclamation said.
