R.L. Stine‘s most frightening creations come to life in the Goosebumps film — and Jack Black isn’t happy about it.
The Sony family film, directed by Rob Letterman, casts Black as the author of the famous book series, whose monsters all come to life when accidentally unleashed by a group of kids. Yes, that includes the abominable snowman of Pasadena and the invisible boy, who were locked inside the manuscripts themselves — for a reason.
The feature also stars Halston Sage, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Ryan Lee, Amy Ryan and Ken Marino.
Stine published a total of 62 books in the horror-thriller children’s book series, the first being Welcome to Dead House in 1992. The series, known for paying homage to classic sci-fi/horror movies such as Night of the Living Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, ran through 1997. While considered a horror series, the books are peppered with humor in order to appeal to a young audience.
A clip of the trailer first debuted Wednesday on Good Morning America. “The movie turned out dynamite; I’m so excited,” Black told GMA. “The books are really funny and scary and exciting, and we just wanted the movie to be as awesome and cool as the book series was, and I think we cracked the code.”
Goosebumps hits theaters Oct. 16. Watch the trailer below.
